What initially started as ‘just a student club’ I co-founded, Music & Medicine, pairing my passion for the saxophone with my studies, little did I know how much it would impact my life forever.
We made regular appearances in our local community like nursing homes & treatment centers, but there was one particular event in Stony Brook University Hospital that still gives me goosebumps to this day!
The performance was just like any other, except for one unforgettable moment. I was playing Sinatra’s “Fly Me To The Moon” when suddenly… One of the patient’s eyes began to open.
People in the room were in disbelief. Nurses, social worker, the patient’s mother, because this wasn’t right. Something was extremely out of the ordinary.
As it turned out, the patient who woke was actually in a coma for the past two weeks. By pure coincidence, he had a particular love for Frank Sinatra and woke up to the sound of his music.
That incredible moment was the calling I’m forever grateful for.
I’ve since made it my mission to help & serve others, not through music, but as a committed and passionate occupational therapist.
